Q: What are the different levels of organic certification?
A: Under the National Organic Program, in the US, there are three levels of organic certification: 100% Organic, Organic, Made with Organic.
100% Organic:
100% of ingredients must be grown, harvested, and processed under organic standards.
Organic:
95% or more of ingredients must be grown, harvested, and processed under organic standards. The remaining 5% of ingredients must be on the approved substances list and not grown with GMOs, sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation.
Made With Organic:
Must be 70% or more organic. Any non-agricultural or synthetic ingredients must be on the approved substances list. Any non-organic agriculural ingredients must be grown without prohibited methods, including sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation.
Less than 70%:
Products not claiming to be organic, made with organic ingredients, or listing an organic percentage on the label or in marketing materials may list organic ingredients on the information panel (ingredients label) as organic. This level does not require organic certification.
